PLACES TO EAT

Tarbert is the island's main town and ferry port - it is small, friendly and quiet with several good places to eat.  There are two (2) hotels with public and lounge bars and a variety of shops including a newsagent, butcher, baker, general grocer, post office and craft/ tweed shops.

Free wifi is available in both Tarbert hotels and the Calmac waiting room.

There is a garage for both fuel & repairs, a Bank of Scotland and a Link ATM outside the Tourist Information Centre  where the staff are very helpful. 

Bunavoneader is a hamlet 4 miles north of Tarbert and has an art gallery and honesty box for fresh hen eggs.  

It is also the site of an old Whaling station and probably the most remote tennis court in Britain!  

On the way there from Tarbert, you will pass through Ardhasaig which has a garage for fuel, a general store and lovely a la carte dining at Ardhasaig Hotel.

The beautiful beaches on the west coast of Harris are perfect for picnics whilst the east coast has a more dramatic lunar rocky landscape.  Touring Harris and the adjoining Isle of Lewis feels like exploration and there are many art galleries, craft/ tweed shops, places to eat, museums and archaeological sites to visit. 

Try a walk to the Eagle Observatory on the way to watch the salmon leap at Amhuinsuidhe Castle, or buy souvenirs at the Harris Tweed Centre or the newly opened magnificent Isle of Harris Distillery in Tarbert.

There are fantastic walks all across Harris and Lewis - either exploring the wonderful beaches or taking in the dramatic landscape.  We recommend the walk to Eilean Donan Lighthouse on Scalpay, Toe Head at Northton or a climb up An Clisham.

There are also opportunities for fishing and golf on both islands.

Alternatively, try a Segway experience in the grounds of Lews Castle or power-kiting, surfing, paint balling and go-karting on Lewis. 

Both Tarbert and Stornoway have Sports Centres and it is worth checking out what's on in the An Lanntair Arts Centre (Stornoway).

There's so much to do, see, experience and explore that we hope you will be totally captivated and will come back year on year - hopefully to a Goodfellow Self Catering property where you will be made very welcome.

Public transport (bus) is available to all areas of Harris & Lewis and various boat trips can be arranged during your stay, or booked in advance.

In Tarbert, lunches and evening meals are served at both the Hotel Hebrides, Harris Hotel and The Isle of Harris Inn.  The newly-opened Isle of Harris Distillery has a café and First Fruits Tearoom serves lunches during the holiday season.  

Elsewhere on Harris, the Anchorage and The Butty Bus in Leverburgh provide good quality meals, as does The Temple Café in Northton, The Rodel Hotel and Scarista House.   There are many coffee shops around the island, but it is worth checking opening hours for all eateries as many do not open on Sundays.
